Living as an expat can be an exhilarating experience, full of new opportunities and adventures. However, it can also come with its fair share of challenges, especially when trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. As an expat and a fitness enthusiast, finding the right balance between exploring a new culture and staying true to your health and wellness goals can sometimes feel like a juggling act.

Here are a few tips that I do that help me navigate the journey of balancing life as an expat and a fitness fanatic:
Exploring Local Cuisine: One of the most exciting aspects of living abroad is immersing myself in the local cuisine. While it's important to indulge in the unique flavors and dishes of your new home, remember to make healthy choices. Opt for fresh, whole foods and try to cook at home as much as possible to have better control over your ingredients.
I currently live in South Korea. As much as I love eating out, sometimes it is healthier and cheaper for me to eat in. Depending on the food though, it may be cheaper and just as healthy to eat out. For example, there is a restaurant that sells barley bibimbap in Mangwon Market, and it is super healthy and affordable.
Finding Fitness Opportunities: Discovering new ways to stay active in a foreign country can be a thrilling experience. Embrace the local fitness culture by trying out different workout classes, outdoor activities, or sports that are popular in your new community. It's a great way to meet new people and stay motivated on your fitness journey.
I'm currently a member at a local gym in my neighborhood, and I love getting to know new people. Everywhere I move, I try to join an activity that is specific to that area. About a decade ago, I joined a gym that taught the special forces martial arts in Korea. It was challenging but fun, and I made friends along the way.
Creating a Routine: As an expat, your schedule may be unpredictable at times. However, establishing a consistent fitness routine can help you stay on track with your goals. Whether it's waking up early for a morning run or scheduling gym sessions during your lunch break, find a routine that works for you and stick to it as much as possible.
My current routine involves walking and taking the stairs whenever I find the opportunity. I also go to the gym 5-6 times per week. I travel home from work, eat dinner, and then walk to my gym. My workout routine at the gym involves 15-30 minutes of cardio, strength training, and stretching. I always warm up and cool down with my workouts. I want to mention that I don't always go to the gym in every season of my life. On average over the past 10 years, I go to the gym 3-5 times a week. In my current season of life, I'm enrolled in a fitness challenge. The person with the biggest transformation wins a prize, and I'm really wanting this prize. I'm trying my best to be on top of my diet and exercise plans.
Seeking Support: Being away from friends and family can make maintaining a healthy lifestyle challenging. Look for local fitness groups, online communities, or expat forums where you can connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for health and wellness. Having a support system can make all the difference in staying motivated and accountable.
I am a millennial who still loves to use Facebook and Instagram. I love the expat related groups on these sites. Reddit and TikTok can also be helpful at times. Threads is slowly becoming a place to connect with communities in Korea as well.
Mindful Living: Last but not least, remember to practice self-care and mindfulness in your daily routine. Living abroad can be stressful at times, so it's essential to prioritize your mental and emotional well-being. Whether it's through meditation, yoga, or simply taking a walk in nature, find time to relax and recharge.
I love taking time to rest and recharge each and every day. Whether it's through my workouts, having tea with a friend, eating dinner with my husband, or playing with my dogs, it's so important for me to have time to relax. Sometimes, I do forget to rest. I'm glad I have a supportive husband who reminds me to take breaks and recharge. I am also a person of faith, and I love my quiet times with God whether it's through prayer time, journaling, or having time in the Word.
In conclusion, finding balance as an expat and a fitness fanatic is all about embracing the journey and being adaptable to new experiences. By staying true to your health and wellness goals while immersing yourself in the culture of your new home, you can create a fulfilling and enriching lifestyle that nourishes both your body and soul. So, go out there, explore, stay active, and enjoy the rollercoaster ride of your wellness journey as an expat.
