My Love of Fruit

Updated: Feb 26

Why do I Love Fruit?

Fruit is not only delicious but also versatile and refreshing. The natural sweetness of fruits satisfies my cravings without the guilt of processed sugars. I enjoy the vibrant colors and diverse flavors that fruits offer, making them an exciting addition to my meals and snacks.

What Makes Fruit Healthy

There are many qualities about fruits that can make them healthy, and here are a few:

  • Nutrient-Rich: Fruits are packed with essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, potassium, and dietary fiber.

  • Low in Calories: Most fruits are low in calories, making them an excellent choice for maintaining a healthy weight.

  • High in Fiber: The fiber in fruits aids digestion and helps maintain a feeling of fullness, which can prevent overeating.

  • Antioxidants: Many fruits are rich in antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

Good Choices of Fruit in Korea

There are so many fruits available in Korea. If you're coming from the States, fruits are typically more expensive. If you're coming from Japan, fruits might be a bit more affordable for you. Regardless of the average cost, I will always find a way to have fruit in my home. If fruits ever get too expensive, I'll have to try growing them! Here are some fruits that I love in Korea:

  • Apples: Crisp and sweet, they are a popular snack. They are available year round.

  • Pears: Known for their juiciness and unique flavor, Korean pears are especially delicious. They are cheaper and in season during the fall.

  • Persimmons: A traditional fruit in Korea, they are sweet and can be eaten fresh or dried. They are in season in the fall.

  • Grapes: Available in various varieties, they are a common and refreshing choice. My favorite in Korea are shine muscat (though some people say they're not grapes). The season for these are late summer/early fall.

  • Strawberries: Sweet and vibrant, they are a favorite during the spring season. Also, Korea has a special winter season for Strawberries!

Affordable Fruits in Korea

The following is a list of fruits available at a low cost. The low cost comes from their import price or fruits that are in season or available in green houses all year. Here is the list:

  • Bananas: Widely available and reasonably priced, they are a great source of energy.

  • Oranges: Affordable and packed with vitamin C, they make a great snack.

  • Apples: Often sold in bulk, they can be quite economical.

  • Seasonal Fruits: Purchasing fruits in season can lead to significant savings.

My Top Favorite Fruits

  1. Mango: Its sweet and juicy flesh is irresistible.

  2. Strawberries: Their bright color and sweetness make them a top choice for desserts.

  3. Blueberries: Packed with antioxidants, they are a perfect addition to smoothies.

  4. Peaches: Their juicy texture and fragrant aroma are delightful in the summer.

  5. Pineapple: The tropical flavor adds a refreshing twist to any dish.

These are strawberries we bought from Costco here in Korea. When we buy fruit from Costco, they typically last longer than fruits we buy from the local markets. The local markets do have cheaper fruits, but it will be better to buy them if you plan to eat them soon!
